The Launch of the WikiGap Season

Wikimedia Sverige

The International Women’s Day (8 March) marks the beginning of the WikiGap Season. Join us in our global kickoff event, and take part in the WikiGap Challenge that runs throughout the month, until 8 April. This year, in partnership with the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), women human rights defenders will be in extra focus.

For the fourth year in a row, 8 March marks the start of the WikiGap Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to close the gender gap on Wikipedia, and so far, more than 5,000 editors have written over 50,000 articles. Events have taken place across the world, and new organizers join the campaign all the time.

When the circumstances in the world force us to go all virtual, we have decided to launch the campaign this year with a global virtual event. Joined by, among others, the Permanent Swedish Representative to the United Nations, Wikimedia DC, and Global Citizen, we will hold trainings on how to edit, write plenty of articles – and launch the WikiGap Challenge of 2021!

WikiGap Challenge is an online challenge that anyone can take part in, from 8 March to 8 April. The idea is simple: to write as many and as good articles on women, in any language, as possible, throughout the duration of the challenge. The winner receives great prizes, and prominent women gets much more well-deserved visibility.

For this year, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) have proposed a set of 25 prominent woman human rights defenders, who have no or few articles on Wikipedia. All these names will yield bonus points in the WikiGap Challenge. This means that through the Challenge, prominent human rights defenders across the world will get much more visibility on Wikipedia.
